Saint-Yves Day2010: Brittanys National Day in Cork

Bretons will celebrate this year again their National Day on 22nd May 2010 and invite their Irish cousins!

Brittany, the only Celtic region of France, is very similar to Ireland in many points, including its welcoming atmosphere and its festo-noz (i.e. Breton cilthe).

Gouel Erwan, as Saint-Yves Day is called in Breton (the Celtic language of Brittany), was at first a religious fest to celebrate Saint Yves, a priest of the 14th century, who dedicated his life to the poor and to justice. This day then became one of the symbols of Brittanys identity and is now celebrated in 200 countries around the world, including Japan, Slovakia, the USA, etc. And in Ireland too of course!

As every year since 2008, Saint-Yves Day will be celebrated in Cork. BreizhEire, the association gathering Breton people and fans of Brittany in Ireland will organise on Saturday evening, 22nd May a Breton cil at the Franciscan Well Brewery on North Mall. Singers and players from Brittany will perform all the night long, including the successful Trio Tan band and very talented harpists from UCC. No worries for people who are not fond of dance, they are also warmly invited! Besides from dancing, people can enjoy the music, Franciscan Wells home-made beer or some delicious sweet or sour crepes.

The two last sessions of this event were a real success, with more than 150 people on the last one! BreizhEire hopes that this years session will be as successful and is very proud of the communities mixing created by this event. It is actually one of the key points of the success of such an event: Breton and Irish people dancing and drinking together, knowing more from each other and finding common points in the others culture. The evening will start at 8 pm and the entry costs 7.

BreizhEire organises several events throughout the year nationwide, such as Breton games sessions, Breton language courses, festo-noz, Breton dance and music learning sessions. The association would be delighted to keep any person interested informed about these events (write to www.breizheire@gmail.com to be added in the mailing list).
